Where to start?
Start with yourself like I did some twenty years ago here in Dublin , Kildare, Sligo and Northern Ireland . On looking at the meaning of the word Genealogy in “ Concise Oxford English Dictionary” 11 th edition 2004, origin from Greek word ‘ genealogia' from genea ‘ race, generation '
1 a line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor.
2 the study of lines of descent
If one wishes to embark on family research it can be very rewarding, and with painstaking examination of original documents your research could be unique. Before going to repositories start with your own birth and work backward. It is vital that you start at home gathering as much information as possible from your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or other relatives if there are alive, remembering that their memory may not recall the events from long ago, they can also give you a lot of genealogically information like boxes of old documents, deeds, that maybe in the attic, presses., etc Do not forget you may have to secure permission to have copies of various items; Birth, Marriage, Death, certificate, you should research family papers, photographs, bibles or prayer books, memorials cards, grave records giving you vital information to start with. It is better to get the information about your father from his sister than researching parish and civic records to discover his sister already had the information.
Genealogical research on your family will give you satisfaction reconstruction your own family history connecting between present and past putting pieces of the puzzle together. Tracing you family in Ireland will unfortunately not go back as far as you might expect, the surviving records for the area varied from county to county, records before 1780 would only be a few families descendants of the wealthy or prominent families like the ones that I found on inscription of Gravestones in Drumcondra Cemetery . For most families the average family's records period is 1800 – 1820
